The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will engage over 30,000 taxi drivers nationwide as its ‘mini’ ambassadors to fight corruption.
The commission introduced this initiative to engage the community in promoting the awareness of combating graft.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz said the initial pilot programme would involve 200 taxi drivers in the Klang Valley, after which it would be introduced nationwide.
He said taxi drivers could gather information when chatting with passengers and they would also be the first people to interact with foreigners.
As such, he said, they could be strategic in relaying vital information.
Nazri launched the taxi anti-graft campaign at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre on Sept 13. MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abu Kassim Mohamed was also present.
The taxi drivers, Nazri said, would be briefed on methods to avoid, prevent and report corruption.
He added that the drivers could be whistleblowers and deliverers of information to the MACC.
