Guide on Lessons for Open Government Data Action Planning for Sustainable Development
The benefits of Open Government Data (OGD) and enhanced access to public information are very relevant in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. DESA’s Division for Public Administration and Development Management (DPADM) developed a “Guide on Lessons for Open Government Data Action Planning for Sustainable Development”. The guide compiles findings from the capacity development activities conducted by DESA/DPADM. The project raised awareness of OGD requirements and helped Bangladesh, Nepal, Panama and Uruguay in developing action plans for implementing OGD initiatives. The Guide can be accessed here.

Symposium on Governance for Implementing the Sustainable Development Commitments in Africa
A Symposium on Governance for Implementing the Sustainable Development Commitments in Africa, organized by UNDESA, UNDP, UNITAR and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), in cooperation with UNECA, will take place from 11 - 13 December 2017 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Symposium brings together participants from all African countries and aims to provide a common space for debate and learning on how to implement the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063 in an integrated fashion. The effective implementation of both agendas is hinged on good governance, strong democratic institutions and professional public service. The Symposium will also reflect on how to take whole of government and whole of society approaches to implement in various country situations. More information can be found here.

The call-for-papers for the 2018 IIAS Congress, to be held in Tunis on June 25-29, has been recently published on the Congress website. Submissions are now open, and can be made here. Public Policies and Innovation for Sustainable Development in Latin America
The Latin American Center for Administration for Development (CLAD) and the Government of Spain, through the Ministry of Finance and Public Administration and the National Institute of Public Administration (INAP), will organize in cooperation with DESA/DPADM and other partners the XXII International Congress of CLAD on Reform of the State and Public Administration to be held in Madrid, Spain, from November 14 to 17, 2017.  DESA/DPADM will organize a Ministerial Roundtable  titled "Public Policies and Innovation for Sustainable Development in Latin America" within the context of the above mentioned Congress on the Reform of the State and Public Administration. AAPAM 38th Capacity Development Roundtable Conference
UNDESA/DPADM will organize two workshops during the African Association for Public Administration and Management (AAPAM) 38th Capacity Development Roundtable Conference The two workshops address the topics of “Developing competences for the future to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs” and “Developing transformative leadership in Africa’s public-sector institutions: integrating the SDGs in the curricula of the Management Development Institutes”. The Conference will be held in El Jadida, Kingdom of Morocco, from 6 to 10 November.  It is on the overall theme “A Transformed Leadership: Managing National Resources to achieve the Objectives of Africa Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals”. Symposium on Implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SAMOA Pathway in Small Island Developing States (SIDS)

Many small island developing States (SIDS) are rapidly moving ahead with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the SAMOA Pathway, Climate change and other agreements. 

It is a challenging process that requires adapting institutions and calls for a whole-of-society effort 

  • It is important to sensitize all levels of the government and to mobilize and train public servants on SDGs implementation. The UN can support this by working with public administration schools. 
  • Disaster risk management and building resilience should be at the centre of implementation efforts 
  • Access to concessional financial resources should be improved notably after natural disasters. 
  • Harnessing ICT and mobilizing partnerships is critical for implementing the SDGs 
  • Statistical offices, ministries, parliaments, supreme audit institutions and civil society all have a role in reviewing progress towards the SDG. 
The informal communiqué emanating from the symposium will inform the meetings of the UN oceans conference, high-level political forum on sustainable development, United Nations General Assembly, ECOSOC and UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration. Click here for more information.
