Call for Papers: Second AMEPPA and SESAME Conference

The Association for Middle Eastern Public Policy and Administration (AMEPPA) and ASPA's Section on Effective and Sound Administration in the Middle East (SESAME) is pleased to announce the convening of its Second Conference on November 14 and 15, 2013, at Atilim University in Ankara, Turkey. The conference is also the Second Global Conference on Public Policy and Administration on the Middle East.

We are asking scholars both in the Middle East and around the world to participate in this important conference and be part of a scholarly movement dedicated to public service and public interest in the Middle East. Professionals and academics from all countries and territories and of all nationalities are welcome to participate as presenters (upon acceptance of an abstract or panel) and as conference attendees.

UNPAN-AP Editorial Department Observes 2012 International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction
  The International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDDR) is commemorated on 13 October. The theme of the 2012 IDDR is "Women and Girls - the [in]Visible Force of Resilience". To observe this special event, UNPAN-AP Editorial Department collects about 80 documents with an aim of raising people's awareness in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation process. The series of documents, mainly composed of country profiles, case studies, and analytical reports, show active involvements of governments from all countries in policy, planning and implementation processes for disaster reduction.

The Challenge of Good Governance in India
This paper titled "The Challenge of Good Governance in India: Need for Innovative Approaches by Balmiki Prasad Singh" was circulated in the Second International conference of the Global Network of Global Innovators organized by Ash Institute of Democratic Governance and Innovation & J. F.Kennedy School of Government,Harvard University during March 31- April 2nd, 2008 at Cambridge Massachusetts,USA. This paper makes an effort to provide a framework for good governance in India by identifying its essential features and shortcomings in its working and emphasizes need for innovative approaches. Good governance, according to the author, means securing justice, empowerment, employment and efficient delivery of services. The paper deals with these subjects in detail and also analyses administrative and political fault lines. It identifies criminalization of politics and corruption as two major challenges. It also highlights shifts in meaning and content of national values of the freedom movement particularly those of nationalism, democracy, secularism, non-alignment, and mixed economy and its impact on the nitty gritty of administration as well as on the intellectual build up of the organs of the Indian State. The paper lists several areas of concern that need to be addressed energetically and calls for synergy of efforts between government, the market and the civil society. Economic empowerment of women, and livelihood programmes based on local resources and upgraded skills need special attention by innovators. The basic Gandhi an principal antodaya without sacrificing growth and making instruments of state accountable for good governance.

South Africa: SA Takes Africa Investment Lead
South Africa, rated the most attractive country in Africa for investors, itself invested in more projects in the rest of the continent than any other country in 2012, according to Ernst & Young's third Africa Attractiveness Survey. The report, released on Monday, combines an analysis of international investment into Africa over the past five years with a 2013 survey of over 500 global business leaders about their views on the potential of the African market.

South Africa: SA Doctors to Tackle Lifestyle Diseases Epidemic
South African GPs and other healthcare professionals (HCPs) are being offered free training to help patients quit smoking and excessive drinking, improve their diets and exercise more as part of a new nationwide programme to stem the tide of chronic lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. South Africans are among the worst in the world when it comes to the increasing incidence of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. And, say the experts, this is largely due to our increasingly unhealthy lifestyles that combine poor diets and a lack of physical activity with smoking and drinking. Statistics from Stats SA and the WHO Global Status Report show that among BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and SA), South African women have the highest incidence of CVD and diabetes, and only Russian men are ahead of South African men for the same conditions.

Rwanda: Public Administrators Discuss Crisis Management
Public administrators from around Africa have gathered in Kigali to discuss the role of public administrations in Africa's transformation. The three-day conference is organized by the African Association of Public Administration and Management (AAPAM). Minister of Public Service and Labor Anastase Murekezi said that African leaders need to be more innovative and strategize their policies to mitigate crises towards development in post-crisis era. "Rightful leadership is needed to transform nations to economic prosperity," he said, adding that good public service institutions impact positively on all partners in development specifically private sector.
