The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Government of Germany agreed on January 26, in Berlin through a convention signed by both parties that the new joint cooperation programme for the period 2016-2018 will be dedicated to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the region.

Latin American and Caribbean Growth Projection for 2015 and 2016

Latin American and Caribbean economies will contract -0.4% on average in 2015 and will grow just 0.2% next year, affected by a complex external scenario, according to new projections unveiled today by Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

The Latin American Economic Outlook 2016 Launched
Latin America’s GDP growth slowdown deepened and is expected to be negative in 2015. For a second consecutive year, Latin America falls behind the average growth of OECD countries after a full decade of convergence with advanced economies, according to the Latin American Economic Outlook 2016.

Recapping this Year through the Lens of ECLAC
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) published in 2015 diverse studies regarding the economic, social and environmental situation in the region, including six flagship annual reports that provided statistical information, timely analysis and short- and medium-term outlooks on issues as varied as the expansion of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the behavior of foreign investment and international trade, and the evolution of poverty and inequality.

South Africa: Water Treatment Plant Brings Relief to Ncora Community
People living in and around Ncora in the Eastern Cape, who used to have share their water source with animals or travel long distances to get access to clean water, are overjoyed with the new Ncora Water Treatment Works. Ncora resident and mother of three, Siyabulela Nqando, told SAnews that life had been difficult when it comes to water. “It was a struggle to have clean water in the house. We used to wake up very early in the morning to go and get clean water before the animals spoil it or make the water dirty,” she said.

South Africa: Minister to Launch R14bn Water Project in Northern Cape
The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, is expected to launch the Vaal Gamagara Water Supply Scheme and the Vaal Gamagara quality control laboratory in the Northern Cape. The R14 billion water project includes the refurbishment of the existing Vaal Gamagara Water Treatment Plant near Delpoortshoop, the upgrade of pump stations and the construction of a 430 km long pipeline from Delpoortshoop to Black Rock. The project also includes the equipping of three borehole sites, which are located in Danielskuil, Groenwater and Hotazel to augment water supplied from the Vaal River.

South Africa: Youth Urged to Grab Economic Opportunities
Communications Deputy Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams has called on the youth to make use of the many opportunities that government has made available to them. “Government’s priority is to provide economic opportunities for the youth. You are living in a country where you can dream big, and big dreams can lead to big success. Ours as government is to stimulate the economy by creating an enabling environment through legislation, policies and government programmes,” the Deputy Minister said on Saturday.
