Third Global Symposium on Health Systems Research
Start Date: Sep 30, 2014
End Date: Oct 03, 2014
Venue: Cape Town International Convention Centre
Description: Health Systems Global in partnership with the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research, World Health Organisation, University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, Health Systems Trust, Stellenbosch University and the South African Medical Research Council is hosting the Third Global Symposium on Health Systems Research in Cape Town.

This is the first time this Symposium will be held in Africa. It will bring together approximately 1 500 local and international participants in the field of health systems policy and research under the theme: The science and practice of people-centred health systems. Under the theme of Science and practice of people-centred health systems, the Symposium will address the challenges and best practices as to how health systems across the world can be more responsive to the needs of individuals and communities accessing healthcare.

The Symposium will provide the opportunity for speakers and delegates to share cutting-edge research on people-centred health systems and how to strengthen them to promote greater responsiveness, better health, human rights and social justice. Another facet for discussion includes innovative research approaches and measures for generating systematic and rigorous knowledge of, and engaging people in action towards, people-centred health systems.

Also receiving attention during the Symposium are the issues of creating sustainable health systems through formal teaching programmes and broader capacity-development initiatives, as well as the inclusion of communities and their learnings and the use of knowledge-translation platforms. With more than 200 abstracts and 750 posters accepted, the Symposium will appeal to participants from research, policy-making, funders, programme implementers, activists, health workers, community groups and media.

A marketplace will be available for organisations to showcase their work and achievements and to network with participants. In an effort to promote dialogue at different levels, the parallel Emerging Voices programme will provide the opportunity for young researchers to become involved and maximise their participation in the Symposium.
