National Workshop on Open Government Data Sensitization, Gap Assessment and Strategic Planning

Description:

The Division for Public Administration and Development Management of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA/DPADM), in collaboration with the National Information Commission of the Government of Nepal oganized a national workshop on Open Government Data Sensitization, Gap Assessment and Strategic Planning from 3 to 5 November 2015 in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The objectives of the national capacity development workshop were:

(a) Sensitize national stakeholders on the OGD concept and requirements as well as to demonstrate the intended uses and potential for stimulating OGD in development planning and management

(b) Integrate information on the initial gap assessment (conducted through online survey) with further information on capacity needs for OGD as emerging from dialogue and interaction among workshop participants

(c) Identify the demand for relevant datasets and carry out strategic planning on the next steps required for advancing OGD initiatives based on the country context

The workshop was one of the two meetings to be organized in Nepal under the project "Strengthening of capacities of developing countries to provide Access to Information for Sustainable Development through Open Government Data (http://www.unpan.org/ogdce)". This initiative aimed at developing a strategy for creating and utilizing the open data, particularly in thematic areas relevant to the achievement of internationally agreed development goals. It will assist with the development of a policy framework and technical infrastructure for implementing OGD initiatives and strengthening the open data community in Nepal.

Relevant government officials, experts, civil society actors, representatives of media outlets and business leaders in Nepal attended and contributed to this event.
