African Youth Conference on Entrepreneurship for Social Development
Start Date: Nov 16, 2012
End Date: Nov 17, 2012
Venue: Wits University in Johannesburg.
Description: Organisation of African Youth (OAYouth) and partners are hosting a conference on Entrepreneurship for Social Development from 16-17 November 2012 at Wits University in Johannesburg.

OAYouth is an empowerment vehicle and a continental movement for all youth in Africa. It is a continental platform for young people to assert their power in numbers, energy and imagination to transform Africa to be a beacon of hope. OAY operates in South Africa, also Cameroon and Zimbabwe.

The conference aims to crystallise the efforts of donor organisations, business sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), government as well as youth in building cooperation, understanding, and strategies for formal and informal skilling of communities on entrepreneurship, for sustainable development.

Introduction

The widening chasm of inequality between the poor and wealthy that presently defines South Africa’s social and economic strata has become a source of perennial civil unrests by youth and the general citizenry. The marches are denting the country’s image as Africa’s development powerhouse. Entrepreneurship skilling by civil society, grant-makers and corporations, is necessary to mitigate prevalent challenges of unemployment, economic stagnation, poverty and social inequalities.

Conference Objectives:

  • To develop a clear conceptual framework on how entrepreneurship programmes can be improved to reduce unemployment and poverty in South Africa;
  • To strengthen civil society initiatives that support entrepreneurial culture as part of social development in South African communities;
  • To improve coordination among stakeholders to achieve sustainable entrepreneurial programmes;
  • To setup a ‘network’ that will drive Entrepreneurship forward.

Expected Conference Outcomes

  • The setting up of a ‘Network for Entrepreneurship Development in South Africa’, (NEDSA), comprising of representatives from all stakeholders;
  • A call for government to introduce entrepreneurship in basic academic curricula;
  • Coordination of the fragmented efforts of local and international grant-makers on youth programmes and enterprise development;
  • A Call to Action to effectively address issues, challenges and opportunities for youth employment through enterprise development and innovation;
  • Guidelines/tools to ensure that youth entrepreneurial programmes reach the goals they are set to achieve; and
  • Resolutions that guide and mandate South African youth, NGOs and grant-makers to develop and implement entrepreneurship interventions over a period of five years.

The conference is aimed at NGOs, local and international grant-makers, United Nations agencies and development cooperation partners, business and corporate social investment vehicles, government officials and institutions, academic thought leaders, political parties, youth and students.
