The Centre for the Study of Global Governance

is a leading international institution dedicated to research, analysis and dissemination about global governance. Based at the London School of Economics, the Centre aims to increase understanding and knowledge of global issues, to encourage interaction between academics, policy makers, journalists and activists, and to propose solutions.

The Centre, established in 1992 by Professor Lord Desai, has pioneered research into globalisation. Today it is led by co-directors Graham Wallas Professor of Political Science David Held and Professor of Global Governance Mary Kaldor.

Cyber Security Policy & Research Institute

The Cyber Security Policy and Research Institute, Initially established in October 1993 as the Cyberspace Policy Institute, is a center for GW and the Washington area to promote technical research and policy analysis of problems that have a significant computer security and information assurance component. Inside GW, the Institute bridges discipline barriers to bring together researchers from all of the Schools with interests in policy issues related to computer technology, the internet and security of critical infrastructure. Outside of the University, it works with government and private organizations to study the impact of rapid technological change on business, government and society and the infrastructure security problems caused by the convergence of data and organizations in a networked world.

CSPRI has become the premier venue for policy discussion and research for the growing open source development movement.

The Development Policy and Analysis Division is the main development research division of the UN secretariat. The Division’s research aims to contribute to a strengthening of international cooperation for the economic and social development of all countries and to foster their effective integration into the world economy in the context of the UN Development Agenda. Greening the National Accounts: Approach and Policy Use

Green national accounts capture the interaction between environment and economy. The objective is to assess the long-term sustainability can be operationalized in terms of produced and non-produced (natural) capital maintenance. Integrated environmental and economic accounts expand therefore the asset boundary of the conventional national accounts. The integrative power of such accounting is based on pricing 'priceless' environmental phenomena. Monetary valuation is thus controversial, and alternative physical accounting is also discussed. The main policy applications are (a) the use of environmentally adjusted 'eco-nomic' variables in macroeconomic policy and (b) the setting of market instruments of cost internalization according to the environmental cost generated by economic agents.

Capacity Building in Conflict Management

The management of disputes and conflict in society is one of the primary and enduring responsibilities of all governments and, therefore, one of the pre-eminent areas in which the UN can serve its Member States. One aspect of the increasing United Nations system-wide priority given to conflict prevention and management is the strengthening of the governance capacities of States to manage and regulate conflicts in constructive and non-violent ways. As such, several capacity-building projects are being undertaken to impart awareness and skills to government officials and their civil society counterparts, to assist them to anticipate and respond to crises, to work effectively in conflict-prone environments and to increase their ability to defuse tension and address the inequalities that may lead to violence. The projects involve strengthening governance institutions, enhancing mechanisms for participation, supporting the development of mediation facilities and other forms of alternative dispute resolution, and providing skills training to enrich national development policy and practice with conflict resolution principles, tools and techniques so as to better harness development as a vehicle for sustainable peace.

Caribbean E-Government Knowledge Bank (TASF)

The 5th Caribbean Ministerial Consultation on Regional Cooperation for E-government Capacity Building (Barbados, June 2004) adopted the Action-Oriented E-Government Strategy for Countries of the Caribbean Region, 2004-2007. In embracing the Strategy, as a framework within which the governments of the region could develop their own national strategies and formulate national and regional programmes in the area of e-Government, the Meeting also agreed on various actions to support its implementation, including the establishment of a regional Technical and Advisory Support Facility (TASF).

UN Global E-Government Readiness Knowledge Base

The United Nations E-Government Readiness Knowledge Base (UNKB) is a benchmarking tool that provides a comparative assessment for monitoring progress of a country’s e-government readiness from 2003 to 2005. As such it provides an interactive snapshot picture of a country’s e-government readiness in the world. The primary source of data for the Knowledge Base comes from the United Nations Global E-Readiness Reports and Survey. This section of the Knowledge Base contains an introduction to the UN mission as it relates to e-government and also provides the UNKB E-Government Framework, which establishes the foundation for the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) efforts.
