| 1st e-Gulf Awards Conference, Sultanate of Oman |
The Sultanate of Oman will host the first-ever Gulf Cooperation Council
(GCC) e-government conference in December, recognising the rapid growth
of the e-government sector in Oman and the country’s growing
advancement in its delivery of electronic services (e-services) to its
citizens and residents. The conference will be held at Al Bustan Palace
Hotel in Muscat from December 21-23, 2009. The three-day event will
also feature an exhibition on e-Governance projects from the six GCC
countries and culminate in the awarding of the first e-Gulf Award that
will recognise excellence in the delivery of e-Projects and e-Services
in the GCC. Ms. Adriana Alberti, Coordinator of the United Nations
Public Service Awards Programme, DPADM and Mr. Richard Kerby, Senior
Inter-regional Adviser will make a presentation respectively on
"Innovation in Governance and Public Administration" and on
"E-participation and Citizen Engagement in the GCC".

The Roundtable on Governance and Applications of ICTs for Achieving the MDGs in the Asia-Pacific region will take place in Bangkok, Thailand from 9 to 10 December 2009. The themes of the roundtable are: Governance with effective applications of ICT to achieve the MDGs; Partnership building for good governance with the use of ICT to achieve the MDGs; Sub-national, national, and international networks of stakeholders capable of contributing to the establishment of a Knowledge Base on the uses of ICT for good governance and for achieving the MDGs.

| Internet Governance Forum 2009 |

The fourth annual meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF),
organized by DESA through DPADM, will be held from 15 to 18 November
2009 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. The overall theme of the meeting is
Internet Governance – Creating Opportunities for All. The theme
reflects the basic purpose of the IGF to develop a common understanding
of how to maximize the opportunities the Internet provides, and how to
address the risks and challenges, while also raising awareness of the
development dimension of Internet Governance.
There are
six items on the agenda: (1) managing critical Internet resources; (2)
security, openness and privacy; (3) access and diversity; (4) Internet
governance in light of WSIS principles; (5) desirability of the
continuation of the Forum; and (6) impact of social networks.
